The MFTA Winter League began at Far Coley in Staffordshire. Despite a clear sky and plenty of sunshine there was a cold edge that signalled winter was on its way. A light breeze drifted across the Far Coley woodland, just enough to tickle pellets away from the kill zone or perhaps not enough to guide that straight-one onto the paddle.
After a very successful summer for midlands' shooters there now followed the challenge of ten rounds of the Winter League. Whilst the WL is a great introduction to the sport of Field Target shooting it is also a fervent competition. Top gun from last year was Neil Daniels and there were many excellent shooters after his crown. Maybe the overall title was only for a coveted few but the lure of a place in the MFTA Inter-regional team (top 15) and the Frayed Knot team (top 30) was there for all to dream.
Steve Page, back from South Africa and amongst the favourites for the WL title.
Far Coley's shooting ground consists of various terrain set in working farmland. Today the course started with six targets around a fishing pool, it then meandered up to a new shooting line offering woodland targets. Then on to the empty pool, where declined shots could be found, and finally a tricky pair in exposed field. An excellent test!
Two shooters, Stuart Hancox and Steve Page, came off the course early sharing an impressive score of 28; this would be later matched by Neil Daniels. Michael Brown and Marc Fisher bagged a pair of 27's to give Castle three shooters in the top 5. The scoring then got tight with fifteen shooters sharing 16th spot having knocked over 24.
It was good to see old friends and some new faces on the line.
One of the bonuses of FT is that there's always something to see. Today the farmland was alive with birds but I was surprised when this little fellow flew across the pond whilst I was waiting at lane 1.

Round 2 of the MFTA Winter League took place at Castle FTC near Nottingham. It was a beautiful autumn morning, the sky was clear and there was only a little wind. The car park at Castle was bathed in sunshine but a trip into the woodland saw the temperature plummet. The weather forecast had promised 8mph wind and this coupled with Steve Page's poly-directional course was sure to be a test. The dense woodland of Castle can provide some shelter from the wind but there are open avenues that are exposed which meant that each target needed careful thought.
The misses on the targets today were offering little clues as to the wind direction. What was evident though was that some shooters were missing low, probably because of the cold. Targets were showing the tell tale crescent below the kill-zone. Some face plates had taken quite a battering, particularly the 40 yard stander!
Despite talk of lots of misses some top guns were constructing a good round. Once again Mr Daniels sent the message that he was MFTA Champion and wasn't ready to relinquish it. Well done Neil for an excellent 29.
Being close to the NEFTA region means that a Castle competition will attract our friends from the north but today a surprise Welsh interloper, fresh from 3rd place at the Worlds; well done Berty!
I wasn't there but I gather it was very windy. Congratulations to Marc Fisher whose score of 23 was 2 clear of the field.
Millride it seems is always blighted by poor weather. Last Winter League the wind was gale force and the GP in May saw conditions more akin to the Southern Ocean. So when the forecast for this weekend was for more of the same I'm sure many shooters considered doing a bit of DIY on Sunday. However, the sky remained blue all morning and the sun slowly warmed us all up. I think that some shooters were disappointed that the urban myth had been broken, I heard one claim "we're not supposed to get sunshine at Millride".
Today's shoot consisted of 22 targets within the small wood and 8 exposed targets in the field. It started with a welcoming 55 yarder which was quickly followed by a high stander that caused problems for a few. The wind direction was mainly parallel to the shooting line which meant only a little needed to be given for wind but deciding which side was tricky. It was a long course yet early scores were high. First on the line was Karl and Debbie Clarke from Millride; Karl set the pace with an excellent 28 and Debbie a strong 20 to help her pursuit for the C grade table. This is Debbie; I think!
Millride is the home ground of Mitchel Tomes who today added another 21 to his string of good scores. He is 2nd in B grade and a shoe-in for the Frayed Knot team. Keep it ip Mitch!

Evening Jonta. Perhaps there should be a prize for the first to post.
I'm not going to be critical Shaunie, it's ACE, as ever!
Is there something screwy about the toats page though or am I just misunderstanding it all? There seems to be a column of points extra & I am placed above Steve yet he has more points, puzzled!
Greg, you must have a table that I can't see!
A crate of Stella sounds good Mr C
greg, I need your email to send you some gun porn
Thanks Shaun for the time and effort in producing this blog.
he means the total page on far coley site.
A B and C grade seem as though they are not in numerical order
Nice one Shaun, thanks.
There are some scores not in the right order in A, B and think C.
thats a nice picture of a budgie you managed to get Shaun
Thanks Phil, the lens on my little camera really is impressive.
size isn't everything, or at least my wife says.
Do you think we'll ever see Ian again?
Yeh!
Nice pic Mr Gee!
huh?
Probably very late tonight as he doe`s his indoor shooting mondays. Then another couple of hours to follow the link you have left him on FT adventure Phil
The one of you kneeling. That's it the one on the right hand side. The one you recently added to your profile ...
Extra column corresponds to last years final placings.
ie John is same as last years, i am up two or three where Lee is at present.
Jonta, is it fair to say that the Millride team will be made up of the 6 shooters that finish highest in the WL.
Shaun, do you have a current email address for greg, he's gone walkabout
Yes, I'll e-mail you.
As to the scores, apart from the AA grades the shooters are in the order that they finished the course. I'm sure it will be rectified soon.
mail sent Phil.
I thought he was on virgin media?
Generally looking, the scores seem to have done justice to the grading except A a little high and B too low, C just right.
why does B grade have a second score?
Shaun, is Greg powerpoint enabled?
Seems the fairest way to do it Mr C.
Dunno, but you've got 63, well done!
I'm not sure about Greg's Office suite.
got to go guys battery low
got to go guys battery low
I agree Jonta. Now to do some practise!
Not that low then?
Thanks, overall I'm pleased. Could have got that last stander, but hey-ho I 'll settle for 63 points
Very professionally done Phil.
Dont care what any one says Mr G, decent performance.
Look at the difference between those that scored 24 to 23 a massive 15 points!
Dont see many W/L with so many around the 50% mark. Difficulty about right unplanned or planned.
Right, time for my beauty sleep. I'll blog next month!
Adios y buenas noches amigo.
Evening gents...
What a funny old course that was, bloody evil! Great to see everyone though and looking forward to castle and no doubt another mangling, but it would be boring if it was easy!
Will
Wouldnt say it was evil Will as it was proven not too difficult for some.
What i did find annoying was strings going up M6 first on a few plus twigs, trees and bushes in front of a few also.
cheers phil for looking after me, at least somebody cares. my mate phil
Ahhhhh! Ian, we ALL look after you. As proof of my efforts, I can confirm that we are both booked in to shoot the Bisley 80 on the 25th.
C'MON!
Holá muchachos, ¿cómo está?
help greg ! when i try to find this site my computer takes me direct to ft adventure. which is wrong blog , i need to come here. if phil hadn`T LEFT ME THAT CLICK HERE I WOULD NOT BE HERE NOW.
We will have to practice, 'COPY n' PASTE'
At the top of your screen there's a long box with writing init starting with, 'https://'
That is where you 'PASTE' the links given to you, it's how you can look at those piccies Jesús posted as well.
I f you use your mouse to move the cursor to some writing, press & keep pressed the left mouse button & drag to cursor across, it will 'Highlight' that writing.
If you press the right mouse button an option box will appear with 'COPY' in it, press that, then going up to that long box I mentioned before, right click again & press 'PASTE'. Jobs a good 'n!
It looks like my place of work will be moving locations to a Warehouse over by the Airport in a couple of months. Emptying one Warehouse & filling another will require a fair amount of work & potentially long weekends of OT. Specifics not known but my WL plans could be jeopardised!
Ian, are you saving the site to your Bookmarks?
Well Done again!!!.
Shaun great work as per normal.
Nice to see all you gents again on Sunday, thought we were in for a cold shoot but ended up nice and warm. Well done you Milride mob some good scores put in as normal.

ATB Steve.
Steve just had a look at work load and done around 40 for the 2008 Niko.

Evening lads.
I've just posted in STB the announce of the next Euskadi Open.
It will be held on 3rd.&4th. of July, just before the GP6 in order to avoid any coincidence with the GP events.
Thanks Greg rememebering to me.
Ian, if you have some difficulties to see the piccies, please let me know and I can send you by e-mail the link to share all the European piccies album.
Hello Telsa,
How are you? well I hope. It was nice to meet you in person at the Euro,s. It was also great to meet and have a good laugh with the other Spanish and Portuguese team members.
Have you tried your Sportsmatch lens to help read your wheel markings?. Would you be able to send me the link for the Euro photos.
ATB Steve.
Buenas noches mi amigos.
Steve - nice to see that you have added a pic.
shaun, Took me a while but managed it at last, its the one you sent me last year!.
I thought you looked older on Sunday!!!
Hi Steve. It was also nice for my to meet you all.
No, I didn't tried yet the Sportsmatch lens so I need to modify the support so the lens must be located at 10cm. of the turret label to work fine and the position of my scope doesn't allow to fix the lens support in the right site.
Please find the album link as follows
http://s285.photobucket.com/albums/ll73/TESLA0611/EUROPEO%2009/
Telsa, Thanks for the link, Shaun thanks mate!!!!
Shaun,
you normally have individual addresses for the winter league rounds which I can then link to on the Millride winter league page.
This first one is called "MFTA Winter League 2009-10".
Will the others be individually labelled, e.g. round 2, round 3 etc?
Otherwise my links will not work.
No Phil, it will be a contiuous tale.
Hola Shaun.
¿Qué tal estás?
¿ Qué tal Ev y los niños?
Yo estoy bien.

A slug fest on the results page at the 'ride!
Karl & the Womborne Sniper on 13 comps each with 6 points between them in A Grade, while Debs & I are battlin' it out in B, 1 point in it but of course next week is H2H13 & that can mean only one thing............................................
El grande león de marino himself on 98 points to my 95 & both of us finally on the same number of comps.
GAME ON!
You can bring petrol if you like Ian but Chuggin' Betsie only drinks diesel!
Night all, sleep tight!
parafin`s good mate
I read Greg's post about "El grande león de marino" and was quite proud to think it meant "lion hearted warrior". Well I've just found out that it means "The great sea lion". You've really gone and done it now Greg, you've got me angry and ready for revenge.
shootin talk C`mon
Ian, I'm planning retribution.

Paul

blogging.
Paul
Shaun, is there a location defined for the Frayed Knot?
Hi Phil, it's NEFTA this year. No venue has been announced yet, I'm hoping for Pontefract (assuming I qualify of course)
Buenas noches a todos. Just back from the 49th, it's getting busier & busier of a Wednesday night, can't get near the .308, everyone seems to be feeling the need to get tooled up!
Paul nearly made it on then! I know how it feels to be denied access due to technical issues though.
Off work tomorrow for an eye pokeing session at the Hospital, what fun!
Where did everyone go tonight?
That was fun, two lots of pupil dilation solution then very bright lights shone at very close range into them folloed by a flu inocluation for good measure!
I'll have to go back next month for essentially the same thing again, my normal eye clinic check up plus pupil dilation of course & at some point the Swine flu jab!
I'm getting my moneys worth back out of the National Health Service anyway!!!!!
hi Greg,i think you're having my monies worth as well!
Ahh, that's better, an hour in bed during the middle of a normal working day is not only decadent but sorts your eyeballs out a treat, I can see again!
Not a bad attempt at my first post, just the one spelling mistake, considering I had trouble seeing the screen!
Hello Paulie, no access filters on your work computer then?
Off to Spanish now, ¡Hasta lavista!
No one again!!!!!! Have you lot found somewhere better to go or what????
Back from Spanish & today it was,
TENER = THE VERB TO HAVE
No new identities tonight but I do have to assemble a false charactor profile complete with fake family members & job for next week.
We brushed up on the first verb we did, TO BE. Tonight as well & the example we used as an excercise was, were we married, single, divorced or widowed. I had the most promising MILF in the room ask me,
"Antonio, ¿Está tú soltero?"
Which I thought was very encouraging, I really can't remember when an attractive woman last asked me that!
Hello all,
the glitch i had seems to have sorted itself out, although idon't know what itsdone to my picture!
THAT'S BETTER PAULIE!!!!!
The other one looked like it had been taken outside of some Institution!
Buenas noches Gregory. I too enjoyed Spanish this evening.
Shaun, Connor keeps asking me when you fantasy football needs to be in by?
me 100
Hi Paul, I'm sure the one I took on Sunday had you holding a rifle.
thanks Greg it was
Shauns house.
That should be your
THAT'S CALLED POACHING THAT IS!!!!!
Loitering on the fringes & pouncing on a post number like that!
Paul, he needs to have registered, ONLINE, before Saturday 17th October. He needs to buy a voucher off me for £3.50 ASAP. Parents are allowed to enter as well.
Sneeky Ian, Sneeky
I couldn't put that one on so I thought i'd use one from when i was slimmer.
wanted to do that for some time, i was waiting seceretly
YES, LOITERING!!!!!
And Señor shore, what was the size & the shape of your lesson then?
I have a nice story to tell:
When we shot the North Oxon 50 our trio was adjacent to Alan and Ashley Holloway. I noticed that they too were using Burris scopes and had nice turret caps. I asked Alan where he had got it and he said that he thought he had a spare. Yesterday, I received a letter from Alan with the turret enclosed. He said "it was sitting on the shelf" and he was getting no use from it so he gave it to me.
Nice or what.
Thanks Shaun,I'll tell him to see you.
Well gents it's been a pleasure, but i have to get some sleep time in.
See you Saturday.
Greg, tonight we learned about talking about ourselves and asking others.
THAT'S FT!
Asking others what?
about them
Como tu llamas
en que trabajas
de donde eres
donde bibes
yes i agree
bibes?
Buenas noches, me illamo Gregory Ralph, soy almacénero y soltero.
yo tengo una madre, una hermana y dos hermanos.
and the same to you too
Sorry "donde vives"
Mi amigo Ian tiene un perro fantástico llamado Mia.
Ahh, soy de Ingláterra
I can't believe we're nearly half way through this Course. Do you know anything about what happens next, any specifics?
Our profesor will continue the course, I think that we are doing the first 10 weeks of the full 30 week course. If we like it, and I do, then we can continue.
yep you have to pull the string look for wind, range find, choose a placement on target and do not change your mind. then bang, it falls. hows that.
Mine's abit more vague. There will definitely be another stage but where, when & with who she isn't so certain.
I get the impression the success of this lesson, with a dozen or so students, caught them on their back feet, the last lesson she taught only had 4!
BUENO TIRO IAN AMIGO!
Work tomorrow, then..........what time at your's Shaun?
Anytime Gregor, let it suit your work time.
I'm aiming for 1930-1945hrs then.
Plus boots!
Okay, buenas noches amigo!
Buenas noches muchachos, I'm away!
i`m on my own again wat a suprise
¡Los Gatitos, por favor!
Hola
Hi chaps , been busy at work , Jon the Leup 20-50 is on a gun , do you want me to remove the scope ....karl..and will not forget Steyr spare cylinder Phil G
good evening
Evening sniper
Phil I will bring that hamster tomorrow.. Will be able to put it on but you may want to make longer posts.
OK Jonta cheers. I've got some stainless steel bar that I hope Mr C'mon can turn into butt weights and hamster posts.
Cheers Karl.
Hopefully I can get Jonny to strip down my air cylinder and I'll get it anodised.
Greg, I have the merchandise for trial purposes.
what merchandise is that then Phil.. or is it top secret..
A very nice TX200.
spending again, does the other half now
Know that is
not for me buddy, I'm bad enough with a PCP.
Greg's interested. It's my mates, I'm on 20%.
they are all turning baggies fans me thinks boing boing
the world's gone mad, completely mad if you ask me.
Greg, take no notice of these people, it's a splendid idea to get a springer, they force you to practice your technique, they are so rewarding, and it will be fun to shoot in Spain.
And this one is as new and is an absolute bargain.
Phil have you seen the hard case bandit is using. Do you have any ideas what make and where from.
these any good?
i am back evening john, phil
First one looks interesting, will compare it to bandits tomorrow
Have you been to sleep sniper
no been cooking wood pideon. dam splended
Whats a pideon
pidgeon i mean
you'll have to check the sizes. i think the ones labelled as shotgun ones would need you to take the back end off every time because of the length. would make it easier to fit into the car but the height might be a squeeze with the scope on
No d required m8. you been on the pop
Phil I want the shorter one, that is what bandit as to do remove the rear end.
evening Mr S. I "found" a piece of stainless bar....
yes pigeon i no wat i meant
is it pigeon variety
See you tomorrow got to go and pick the daughter up again...
wombourne sniper i sort of like that ! now with the right spelling
Yo dudes
Wheres Gregory tonight?
Dunno how to break it (pun) to him.
Evening chaps.
Greg and I just returned from sampling Black Sheep ale.
black shape
you coming tomorrow shaun
No Ian I'm not shooting until Castle next week. Tomorrow I'm taking the kids to the cinema and cooking them fish finger sandwiches.
fish finger sandwiches C`mon
Evening all. Looks like a busy night for the blog.
I'll try to get to the 'ride earlier tomoz to chrono Ella & get some perspective on the fiasco that was last Sunday!
Phil, yes please!
Jonny, all OK matey?
OK, everyone's gone to bed now I'm back then!
i`m still here mr drunk
Hovering.
But off v soon!
1 pint Ian, Mr. Responcible me!
Arby has texted me reporting massive internet failure in the Wolverhampton area so it has been plunged back into the 20th century for a few days, most people haven't noticed yet apparently!
you realy do not want me to reply to that surley!
That bloke on the STB still can't shift that GP!
GREAT SHOOT TODAY!
Weather kind with no extremes to confuse the issue when it came to Ella.
Crono first but the MV proved again to be slightly high between 815 - 820fps. OK if the opinion of Gary Radford is correct that my chrono runs 6fps fast but puzzling as to what went wrong last Sunday.
Jonny D came up trumps with extended cheekpiece, Cheers Jonny, marvelous mate!
I had a shoot with Phil's mate Daves's TX200 & thought it very nice so made an offer that was excepted so I am now the proud owner of an exceptional Boinger, HURRAH!
On to the Course, Roy,(my arch nemesis!) & Paul shooting as a duo & me with Jonny one lane ahead, so I could keep an eye on them both.
I started rather shakely, playing OXO but Roy & Paul are clearly having a good 'un. Jon stayed clear all the way up to target 18 which tripped all four of us up. I pulled myself together by Lane 3 & scored a 7, 8 & 9. Roy played it the other way with a 9, 8 & 7. Paul had a more random selection but we all ended up 6 down by the end with honour maintained all round.
Jonny D refused to drop anymore for a 1. Daz, Phil G, Karl & Ian all dropped 2 but Jonta cleared with his newly painted Leup & scarlett mounts.
As for other scores, I think Debbie may of dropped 8 & Mitch 4.
Anyone I've forgotten I appologise.
Bad news for tomorrows exploits however. It looks like I'm been imprisoned by Birmingham City Council & their B'ham Marathon. The roads close at 0100hrs tomorrow morning & the route passes both above & below my home. The only way I'll be able to make Far Coley tomorrow is if I leave the car the other side of the route & carry the gun to it early tomorrow, which I don't fancy doing. I wanted to excorcise some demons on the Course tomoz & try out my new Boinger too!
DAMN IT!
I Greg thought you was writing a Mr C report there. Sorry you cannot make it tomorrow.
great shooting today mate
both of you
Hi Ian did well yourself again...
we are all tryin, millride as a team
karls spoke to calps, and he says he wants 1 team per club, thats all
Thats a bumma
Is Mark coming tomorrow. I am picking Mitch up in the morning
Evening all.
Excellent report Greg and welcome to the springer club. What's the scope like?
he said not
Evening Mr C
out at party on the p**S
Evening Jonta, congratulations on your clearance. All I cleared was the dishwasher!
Hope you did not burn those fish finger sandwiches Mr C
No they proved okay. Went to see "The invention of lying" which was quite funny.
me
200
That will be 5 pints only then Ian..
I'd hate to deny Greg or Ian their desire for 200 cause I know that's what they're waiting for!!!!!
