The MFTA Winter League began at Far Coley in Staffordshire. Despite a clear sky and plenty of sunshine there was a cold edge that signalled winter was on its way. A light breeze drifted across the Far Coley woodland, just enough to tickle pellets away from the kill zone or perhaps not enough to guide that straight-one onto the paddle.
After a very successful summer for midlands' shooters there now followed the challenge of ten rounds of the Winter League. Whilst the WL is a great introduction to the sport of Field Target shooting it is also a fervent competition. Top gun from last year was Neil Daniels and there were many excellent shooters after his crown. Maybe the overall title was only for a coveted few but the lure of a place in the MFTA Inter-regional team (top 15) and the Frayed Knot team (top 30) was there for all to dream.
Steve Page, back from South Africa and amongst the favourites for the WL title.
Far Coley's shooting ground consists of various terrain set in working farmland. Today the course started with six targets around a fishing pool, it then meandered up to a new shooting line offering woodland targets. Then on to the empty pool, where declined shots could be found, and finally a tricky pair in exposed field. An excellent test!
Two shooters, Stuart Hancox and Steve Page, came off the course early sharing an impressive score of 28; this would be later matched by Neil Daniels. Michael Brown and Marc Fisher bagged a pair of 27's to give Castle three shooters in the top 5. The scoring then got tight with fifteen shooters sharing 16th spot having knocked over 24.
It was good to see old friends and some new faces on the line.
One of the bonuses of FT is that there's always something to see. Today the farmland was alive with birds but I was surprised when this little fellow flew across the pond whilst I was waiting at lane 1.

Round 2 of the MFTA Winter League took place at Castle FTC near Nottingham. It was a beautiful autumn morning, the sky was clear and there was only a little wind. The car park at Castle was bathed in sunshine but a trip into the woodland saw the temperature plummet. The weather forecast had promised 8mph wind and this coupled with Steve Page's poly-directional course was sure to be a test. The dense woodland of Castle can provide some shelter from the wind but there are open avenues that are exposed which meant that each target needed careful thought.
The misses on the targets today were offering little clues as to the wind direction. What was evident though was that some shooters were missing low, probably because of the cold. Targets were showing the tell tale crescent below the kill-zone. Some face plates had taken quite a battering, particularly the 40 yard stander!
Despite talk of lots of misses some top guns were constructing a good round. Once again Mr Daniels sent the message that he was MFTA Champion and wasn't ready to relinquish it. Well done Neil for an excellent 29.
Being close to the NEFTA region means that a Castle competition will attract our friends from the north but today a surprise Welsh interloper, fresh from 3rd place at the Worlds; well done Berty!
I wasn't there but I gather it was very windy. Congratulations to Marc Fisher whose score of 23 was 2 clear of the field.
Millride it seems is always blighted by poor weather. Last Winter League the wind was gale force and the GP in May saw conditions more akin to the Southern Ocean. So when the forecast for this weekend was for more of the same I'm sure many shooters considered doing a bit of DIY on Sunday. However, the sky remained blue all morning and the sun slowly warmed us all up. I think that some shooters were disappointed that the urban myth had been broken, I heard one claim "we're not supposed to get sunshine at Millride".
Today's shoot consisted of 22 targets within the small wood and 8 exposed targets in the field. It started with a welcoming 55 yarder which was quickly followed by a high stander that caused problems for a few. The wind direction was mainly parallel to the shooting line which meant only a little needed to be given for wind but deciding which side was tricky. It was a long course yet early scores were high. First on the line was Karl and Debbie Clarke from Millride; Karl set the pace with an excellent 28 and Debbie a strong 20 to help her pursuit for the C grade table. This is Debbie; I think!
Millride is the home ground of Mitchel Tomes who today added another 21 to his string of good scores. He is 2nd in B grade and a shoe-in for the Frayed Knot team. Keep it ip Mitch!

What's that?
The English team training not only shooting but also Spanish!
You must prepare some paragraphs in Sapanish to be read at the end of the comp. Dont forget it.
It would be a pleasure Jesus.
My next set of 10 lessons commences on 14th Jan 2010.
OH NO, NOT READY FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING!!!!!!!!!!
Euskadi Open 2019 perhaps.
Si Jesús, I have added to that thread also.
Don't worry Greg, after four beers all the shames are away!!!
14th Jan! We are kicking off as soon as this one finishes!
We have a break next week as the lesson has been called off due to that accident last Saturday, in Moseley. Apparently, they were students at Hall Green school so there will be some kind of memorial next Thursday.
The following week will be our final lesson of this block, then straight into the next one.
How is going the vocabulary?
quartro Euskadi cervezes! make two English beers, I shall need ocho bottellas de San Miguel for the desired effect!
The more I learn, the more I realise I have to learn.
Para beber ocho cervaza por favor y para mi amigo una coke lite.
¡Tengo sed! para mi ocho San Miguel, por favor!
I'm just talking with Jose and his wife and they are laughing with the cervezas
How refreshing that your initial vocab includes thirst. I'd say that's well prepared Gregory.
Adios amigos. Blog manana!
Buenas noches Shaun.
Dream with Jacklin Smith! jejejejeje.
I'm going too to bed, so tomorrow I've got a meeting with the woodcocks in the mountains and I need to wake up early.
Buenas noches amigos
Sorry I've missed everybody, have just got back from a 400 mile round trip to Wareham in Dorset, with a diversion on the way to see some more friends who've just had one of these:-

What did it taste like?
Have you never had a hedgehog loaf?
Are you feeling confident for tomorrow, Gre?.
Ignore him Roy, if it aint drink its food.
Supposed to be a bit nutty, hang on a bit i'll ask the dog.
Says make sure you pluck them spikes.
Just a quick post off out for meal and a pint or ten..
Well done Jon on taking the H2H title mate.. You shot well again.
come to the conclusion that its me or the gun that does not like the heavy rain... most probably me do not seem to be able to block it out.
Well done again mate..
come to the conclusion that its me or the gun that does not like the heavy rain
you and me too buddy. Infact, thinking about it, I haven't found weather I do like yet...
Evening folks, I'm finally in & have peeled my soggy gear off. Roy, the beer is in the beer fridge chilling, I'll give you my verdict on my victory beer later on.
We both enjoyed that competition so much we've decided to do it again, so watch out Millride for more of Roy's dirty tricks & how my inate sportsmanship overcomes them!
Evening chaps!
I hope that you all appreciate that I missed today's shooting to represent you at the BFTA meeting. Oh I'd have loved to be out there!
Thank you Mr C for representing MFTA, took one for the club.
Thanks John, close but you have the most clearances 3, me 2 and Daz 1.
Thank Pilsbury for talking me in to handing in my first card 2nd round.
Personally i didnt think it was heavy rain today, mine sounded different but performed as usual.
I have something up my sleeve for club members if i can import it, say no more.
Loads of connection or dns isues tonight, else i would sort.
Good morning gents!
Nodded off, as usual, last night.
A bit disappointed that my worm to Phil Gee was not snatched and spit out again. Come on Phil, have a rant!
I'm busy reading through the previous meetings minutes.
Did you remember to fill in your expenses form?
That's more like it Phil. Good evening all!
so, what news from the BFTA? Or should we wait until the info filters down through our regional reps......
programme for early part of 2010 now on the website.
Evening Boys.
Filled the gun after the shoot yesterday, but when I tried it today all I got was a little "puff". Sent a text to Jonta who suggested I refill the cylinder, then unscrew it until I heard air escaping, and then screw it in just enough for the escape to stop, and then try it again tomorrow. I'm not sure why I've done this, but such is my trust in the almighty Jonta I comply without question.
I thought you'd always fancied a little puff?
Next year GP series will include a class for Steyr shooters in their 40's who do a real job in engineering and drive a Ford Focus. The bonus bunny has been increased to £1000 and all rounds will take place within 10 miles of Phil Gee's house.
Only a few days until Purley Roy, get in the game!! We need you!
damn, if only i had a real job in engineering....
Bugger, and I argued for that to be included.
Dear Roger ...
Off to the Clone Wars, blog later!
"I thought you'd always fancied a little puff?"
I was just surprised to get one so early on a Sunday morning
" and all rounds will take place within 10 miles of Phil Gee's house."
with no queues, and a workshop for stripping the gun.
10 miles is a bit far, couldn't you get it any closer than that?
Evening blogsters, what's occuring?
¿Qué paso?
Evening guys, Roy when you tighten cylinder back up if air pressure as been maintained then you have illiminated cylinder failure. Could be seals on end of reg were cylinder screws too. Daz as the same problem. If air still escaped then the problem will most likely to be at the quick fill end ie dowty washer..
Jon first two clearances were with PT
Thanks John, can I text you with the results, to see where we go from there?
Hiya boys, Royston I'm just about to try the Holden's Golden.
No problem Roy
Evening again!
Any shooting today?
Only in the loft Mr C. Done 50 shot chrono check. When I got back yesterday shot 6 off with one of them reading 40fps slower than the other 5..
Not from here. Spent most of the day in Catshill at the Village Hall then back to my big bro's.
I've talking to Will on Facebook & he said that there had been no sightings of 'riders in the vicinity of FC today either.
Greg, there's a pub near John, the Lamp Tavern, (in High St I think), that sells Golden on draught.
I shot the Tx and contacted GINB about a stock.
So who's coming for a beer on the 19th Dec. Jonta, are you up for a few or is it the sex fest known as the works' do?
Sounds good to me Mr C. Works do is on the 18th so I may be tender the morning of our xmas shoot though.
Me, me, me!
Did Karl or Daz do a flyer for the xmas shoot? If either of them send me a copy I'll upload it to the site.
What time are we kicking off?
Yes, I also am at the works' do on Friday and I'm shooting a springer. Could be a cure of make things significantly worse.
A flyer was released, but by who?
I see what you're doing. I'm not biting.
Think both have done a flyer of some description
Right I'm off to be impressed by Doctor House.
Sorry guys I`m off top Gear is imminent
Whats all this then.
Lamp Tavern up Dudley is not in the High Street but almost.
Bathams far better, local brew used to race with John Batham.
I'll watch it tomorrow night, the jungles on.
Fairly sure Karl mentioned last week he will advertise our shoot, drop him an email.
Whats the symptoms from yesterday then Roy?
Ohhh Jonny, they're saying nice things about you on the SA forum. I wouldn't be surprised if more work doesn't come your way from that direction mate!
Talking about Bloxwich near Jonta , Jon.
Filled up before the shoot yesterday and had a very good start. I then started missing plate for no reason and the gun sounded different. Kept going but pellet didn't seem to be reaching target. Walked back down to bottom of course, tried again, and it was completely out of air. Filled up with Greg's bottle, but completely out of air this morning.
A few weeks ago my bottle had a slight leak so had seals replacedby H-Pac. Since then there has been no feel to the tap so air going in faster than I would have liked but I've never exceeded 200 bar. Yesterday when filling up it momentarily went to 205, but I wouldn't have thought that sufficient to do any damage.
Berty has bought an EV2.
Right then, he's ivited us over for a Welsh WL shoot, Avon Hawks on the 28th Feb. Anyone fancy a Charabanc trip?
A coach trip sounds good Greg. How do you rate the Golden?
Dry, not unsatisfying, quite a wheaty smell off the top when poured, but I finished it off alright.
I'll be used to it by the 3rd bottle.
Well, perhaps I should have said Shootingbreak, that might have been more appropriate anyway.
Avon Hawks is a new club so vigin ground to be tread by English boots!
Sure thats a new club Greg?
Not sure going back at least 2006 Mark Shepperd and our own ex Midlander Steve Turner emigrated over 10 years ago.
Not sure where it is but approx Bristol ish, might venture.
I think it was something Berty said that made me assume it was new. Yes, it is by Bristol.
Evening all.
Took the day off today, works been slow & I've got holiday to use up.
So, I popped over to SFS this afternoon to get a sling fitted to Chloe & who should I see in there but a certain Royston De Bolivia planning his next attempt at World conquest!
Do anyone remember a FT venus by Derby beginning with a 'Y'? Apparently Tony Wall was there yesterday & it is one Club that does the whole club house thing right!
some of us were at work, nose to the grindstone, eh Shaun?
Greg, you have more holiday than the Queen
21 days matey, I just didn't waste it by a pool in incredible heat!
Hopefully I get the full 25 day allowance next year!
Got another one off tomorrow, the Dryer is being delivered & there's a Dental appointment, ho-hum!
Is the Leapers range of scopes called something else here, I can't recall coming across them as Leapers but do remember something about Leapers & JSR's?
I have 36 days holiday.
Funnily, school teachers tend to quote the number of days they have to work.
I think Leapers are known as AGS over here, although JSR do sell Leapers scopes.
Ahh, AGS, Paul had one of those, I think. Only go up to 8-32 don't they?
they doe do FT scopes buddy. Yo either want a big nikko or Leup comp. Doe bother with any others, just ask Jonny.
Kiwi bloke was just telling me how it offered the best value for them for FT & it was really difficult to get hold of Big60's down there.
Yeasley not far from Uttoxeter
You shot there Karl?
Yes it was quite a shock when a heavy hand thumped me on the shoulder in SFS. I turned, thinking it was a government agent or a bailiff but was confronted by something far worse ... the Movember Mole.
Leak coming from the ball bearing end of the snap-fit connector. (Thanks for your help Jonta) Went to SS but they'd only got the newer type, meaning I'd need the thread on the filler cap drilling out and an "O" ring putting in. Tried SFS, with the same result, but he hadn't got one of the new ones either. I've ordered one for Wednesday, but who can I speak nicely to for the filler cap modification.
Look on your face was priceless & of course evidence of a guilty conscience!
Roy personally I would of stuck with the original type. Like to bet Jon as probably got a box of them. As he as done alot of quick fill conversions.
Hope you have ordered the connector to the QF so you can fill the cylinder up
Movember mole...... more like winter walruss
The Walrus of lurveeeeee, Jonta!
Jonta I assumed the female would be the same. Apparently I'm using the connector as used on the S200. It would be great if Jon had got one.
Thought the new style connetor had no sliding collar
connector
Sure Jon would have standard male QF
Evening chaps.
Phil, thanks for your support of the overworked servants of the people.
Evening geezas
Roy just need an o ring. Mine does the same the one i nicked off the same person.
The new type is what i developed back in 92- two o rings on protruding stud equal pressure. Theres one on Stalkers site in brass done in 98. Titan then reversed the arrangement.
Got both of these coupler and the nipple.
http://www.airgunbuyer.com/makeBig.asp?ID=2568&pic=0
Could be this you need
http://www.airgunbuyer.com/makeBig.asp?ID=2569&pic=0
New type
http://www.airgunbuyer.com/makeBig.asp?ID=2568&pic=1
I might be missing Crossguns.
Might be a good idea Greg, you wanna see where i have got them to slap the last 6 targets, 2 will cop it worst case plus scenic shots. Its like a Millride wind but double it.
Jon, it's the S200 type.
Work, Greg????
2nd link above Roy, no i havent.
Never mind Jon, I presume I can get one from BAR.
Looking again the nipple is threaded for dust cap, the only difference.
Female coupler the same, just an O ring Sir.
Leapers use any maker and model of scope and put their name on. You can do like wise.
Not positive but think SA have used Leapers or another brand name of the BSA/Niko and would be available to them in NZ.
The disposeable scope.
One of their shooters who shot the 2009 worlds had a Niko in 2004, 2 days to airmail.
Best scope ever had was a one off 1994 Tasco 8-40 until it went back, now relegated to an inferior one last used in 1998 worlds. Far better than any BSA or numerous marks of Niko.
Still got my 2nd and 3rd best scopes.
Jon, Are you saying that with the unthreaded adapter I could use my existing female connector but would need to add an "O" ring. The problem with that, I think, is that my existing threaded dust cap would need to be modified. If this is the case, I'd be better off getting the correct one from BAR, wouldn't you say.
Lynx Greg should be available to NZ at cheaper than mark 2 and 3 Niko, so looking at less than £270 new.
Roy correct, S200 nipple from Bar.
If coupler leaking its only an O ring internally.
Right, just got the Dryer. Here's hopeing that's the end of my White Goods Saga for awhile.
Dentists next, there goes a cool £50!
Back from the Dentists, £70 lighter!
Thanks for the message Phil.
it looks rather nice and is a good price
hm, I'm a poet and I wasn't aware
didn't know it, thats it, it rhymes now
http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=415106
did you get the right one? same guy has 2 or 3 stocks for sale
Back from the Chiropodists now, £20 lighter.........I nearly forgot about that one, what a day!
Your body is costing you Greg!
Yes Phil I did look at his other stocks as well. My concern is that it seems he makes them himself and I'd be a bit unsure of the fit.
Also I'd like an adjustable cheek piece and some indent work on the sides of the mid stock.
Greg, Shaun, Jesus I've done it.
Greg, hostiities are on hold for a while, Ian's now in my little black book for sending me a rude joke about the Wolves
Well done Roy, did she mind?
Took her unawares, Shaun.
And did you book a flight as well.
I think Liverpool's exit is the best thing for them. They've plainly got no hope of progressing in the Champions League yet should expect a good run or even a win in the Europa.
You are correct about the flight, Shaun.
Do we need to find a hostelry with Sky Sports for Sunday?
my initial thoughts Roy but it's not on
I was certain I'd read in the press, very early in the season, that this fixture was being televised.
i am back
And me but I take it there's football?
Welcome back Ian, C'mon!
is it just me, or is anyone else getting screwed up post counts of 2500 and the like with pages of empty posts?
Final head to head table and round 15 results now online
Me too Phil. I'm wandering if it's because of the number of comments. The previous record was 1577. Maybe passing the 1600 is like travelling into the Bermuda Triangle.
you might need to do a winter league part 2 to split it down a smidgen
Evening Phil. I'll wait and see what happens when we go into the 1800's.
Evening all. I'm glad others are having the same trouble with the blog, I thought my PC was playing up again.
Evening Greg. Any news?
News Mr C????????
Well any titbits etc ...
you know, the stuff before the weather.
The sport?
I used to like Titbits, my brother used to get it & I used to sneak a read hopeing to see some......well, tits!
I've got nice scope related piccie to show Jonta, no tits though!
The Reds are dead, where's the Bandit?
Night guys, blog on Friday
Jonta, have a look at this then;
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc267/Baltipal/LeupoldComp35X.jpg
can we look too?
Oh, go on then!
pah, amateur
I'm not sure exactly how this works but the fella spoke to a Custom Shop, (Leupold??????) & got a mildot ret & the anodiseing done through them.
if you go to the Leup site, there is a custom shop section where you can have all kinds of options, even a 'splashed' effect like the BSA Royston had
Evening Chaps. is it safe to come on now Shaun's gone - very serious event on Sunday, don't you know.
Greg, that Easyjet site is wierd isn't it? My first attempt failed when my card was declined because I'd mistakenly stated that it was a Visa, when in fact it was a Mastercard. The second attempt had the price increase by £6 for no apparent reason. This attempt failed because it was timed-out. The third attempt had the price go back to what it was originally. So without their insurance, but including credit card fee it came to a few pennies over £139.
Yes Roy, I was on the phone to Shaun as I booked mine, he was giving me the addy's but we still couldn't get the luggage fee to agree with one another, oh well, we're booked in now!
My new filler connector arrived today, but no-one was at home to receive it. I arranged to collect it from the carrier between 6 and 7tonight but other things got in the way and I wasn't able to go. Hopefully, I'll be up and running tomorrow.
Evening all, I'm having Fish Fingers for tea tonight, did you know they were very nearly called Codpieces when they first came out? I could have been sitting down to a nice Codpiece!
No one about then, can't be that football again surely?
i thought you should be spanishing tonight?
Hi guys, Greg that link doe`s not work for me. Message in box top left corner saying photo been deleted or moved by author
The thought of Greg chewing on a cod-piece takes a bit of getting used to.
Gun back together, and all seems well. A pressure check tomorrow will hopefully confirm this.
Your Firewall, I fear Jonta, my Photobucket is open to all. Pity, 'tis a nice anodised Leup, to make you slaver!
Phil, a memorial to some car thieves who managed to kill themselves & wreck their families lives tonight at the School.(Am I being too harsh?)
Anybody else not able to open that piccie?
Turned firewall off, still cannot open up the link
Mmmmmm, if Phil & Roy were here instead of watching football or something, they could tell us if they were able to open it up!
Mine
I can't open it either.
Shaun, Greg, Phil, have you recieved my email about address change?
link works ok for me
weather looking s..t again for saturday
yes, replied
I went back into my Photobucket account details to double check but it's still open to the public. There's no particular reason why you can't open the piccie up that I can see. Just one of those frustrating Computer things, little boxes always telling you what it can't do for you!!!!!!GRRRRRRRRR!
I have to enter my name and password now everytime I return, whats going on with this cockermaimy site?
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/183/leupoldcomp35xu.jpg

That works for me Phil, Is it the pic Greg was on about.
Bet it as been done in plastikote
Club Agg 17 this soggy Saturday & I have to destroy Dave & Debbie if I'm to conquer B Grade!
Central news weather stated wet saturday but metcheck says different
I must remember to put my waterproof trousers on then, got very soggy skidders last week, most uncomfortable in the pub.
Greg, I've recieved emails from Phil and Jesus, but not yours.
How is Jesus? Did he say how his Dad is?
I've sent another one Roy.
No email received yet, Greg.
That's my crap E-mail provider for you. Right, lets try GMX!
Greg, I don't quite know how to tell you this, and you won't take offence will you, but both of your emails have gone to the junkmail folder without me noticing.
Greg, I think I've removed you from the junkmail list, can you try again please.
Roy, a double barrelled assault on your mail acount! Which one got there first, if any!!!!
Greg, I've received both of them. You are now officially a legitimate human being.
HURRRRRRRAH!
I see Rob has bought a March scope, serious optics!
Finally, got back on! had some trouble with signing in!
Hope all are well?

Evening all, what's occuring?
semms like nothing Greg...
Good evening to those unfortunate enough not to be in the pub.
Good evening Shaun, not been to the pub, but have had the dubious pleasure of 5 hours at Merry Hill, and the consequential severe reduction in available funds. Nevertheless, I've maintained a happy face, and won brownie points as well. In fact I think I may be turning into one of those gay friends that all girls should have to take shopping.
you're shooting on your own tomorrow
