MFTA Winter League 2009-10

Sunday 4th October 2009 - Far Coley
The MFTA Winter League began at Far Coley in Staffordshire. Despite a clear sky and plenty of sunshine there was a cold edge that signalled winter was on its way. A light breeze drifted across the Far Coley woodland, just enough to tickle pellets away from the kill zone or perhaps not enough to guide that straight-one onto the paddle.
After a very successful summer for midlands' shooters there now followed the challenge of ten rounds of the Winter League. Whilst the WL is a great introduction to the sport of Field Target shooting it is also a fervent competition. Top gun from last year was Neil Daniels and there were many excellent shooters after his crown. Maybe the overall title was only for a coveted few but the lure of a place in the MFTA Inter-regional team (top 15) and the Frayed Knot team (top 30) was there for all to dream.Steve Page, back from South Africa and amongst the favourites for the WL title.

Far Coley's shooting ground consists of various terrain set in working farmland. Today the course started with six targets around a fishing pool, it then meandered up to a new shooting line offering woodland targets. Then on to the empty pool, where declined shots could be found, and finally a tricky pair in exposed field. An excellent test!

Two shooters, Stuart Hancox and Steve Page, came off the course early sharing an impressive score of 28; this would be later matched by Neil Daniels. Michael Brown and Marc Fisher bagged a pair of 27's to give Castle three shooters in the top 5. The scoring then got tight with fifteen shooters sharing 16th spot having knocked over 24.

It was good to see old friends and some new faces on the line.
Welcome to Kev Jones and all the other first timers.

One of the bonuses of FT is that there's always something to see. Today the farmland was alive with birds but I was surprised when this little fellow flew across the pond whilst I was waiting at lane 1. Sunday 18th October 2009 - Castle
Round 2 of the MFTA Winter League took place at Castle FTC near Nottingham. It was a beautiful autumn morning, the sky was clear and there was only a little wind. The car park at Castle was bathed in sunshine but a trip into the woodland saw the temperature plummet. The weather forecast had promised 8mph wind and this coupled with Steve Page's poly-directional course was sure to be a test. The dense woodland of Castle can provide some shelter from the wind but there are open avenues that are exposed which meant that each target needed careful thought.

The misses on the targets today were offering little clues as to the wind direction. What was evident though was that some shooters were missing low, probably because of the cold. Targets were showing the tell tale crescent below the kill-zone. Some face plates had taken quite a battering, particularly the 40 yard stander!

Despite talk of lots of misses some top guns were constructing a good round. Once again Mr Daniels sent the message that he was MFTA Champion and wasn't ready to relinquish it. Well done Neil for an excellent 29.
Neil was joined on 29 by Anthony Johnson from Castle. He was thrilled with his score and 100 points puts him top of B grade. Just behind is Millride's Mitchel Tomes who posted an outstanding 26; well done Mitch. There was a string of 28's sharing third place.

Being close to the NEFTA region means that a Castle competition will attract our friends from the north but today a surprise Welsh interloper, fresh from 3rd place at the Worlds; well done Berty!

Sunday 1st November 2009 - Harriers
I wasn't there but I gather it was very windy. Congratulations to Marc Fisher whose score of 23 was 2 clear of the field.
Sunday 15th November 2009 - Millride
Millride it seems is always blighted by poor weather. Last Winter League the wind was gale force and the GP in May saw conditions more akin to the Southern Ocean. So when the forecast for this weekend was for more of the same I'm sure many shooters considered doing a bit of DIY on Sunday. However, the sky remained blue all morning and the sun slowly warmed us all up. I think that some shooters were disappointed that the urba
n myth had been broken, I heard one claim "we're not supposed to get sunshine at Millride".
Today's shoot consisted of 22 targets within the small wood an
d 8 exposed targets in the field. It started with a welcoming 55 yarder which was quickly followed by a high stander that caused problems for a few. The wind direction was mainly parallel to the shooting line which meant only a little needed to be given for wind but deciding which side was tricky. It was a long course yet early scores were high. First on the line was Karl and Debbie Clarke from Millride; Karl set the pace with an excellent 28 and Debbie a strong 20 to help her pursuit for the C grade table. This is Debbie; I think!
It had been suggested that Debbie's outfit had a bit of a polar bear look, no such subtely from Mr Page!Karl's 28 was soon bettered by Des Edwards of Harriers who posted a 29 and his score lasted the day; well done Des!
Millride is the home ground of Mitchel Tomes who today added another 21 to his string of good scores. He is 2nd in B grade and a shoe-in for the Frayed Knot team. Keep it ip Mitch!

Must be down the Pub with Mia.

Baltipal said...

If it's £30 a car one way then it £20 each per car. Figuring on 3 per Motor + kit.
Come on road trip!

I meant "where's Ian? 400 is on the horizon".

CB Chairman said...

What's on on the IOW Gregory?

Jon said...

Other page save going back.
£30 for redestrian return.
Cant get any current or future pricing on line, have to phone.

Better to hire a driver for one of these plus a few fuel stops each way.

whats our opinion on the HW100?
A lovely one on the BBS for £550.
No, I won't be buying it Greg, so leave it. But, I've always fancied one. Why arn't they used more for FT? Pat used to use his to pretty good effect, but I can't remember ever seeing anyone using one in a GP?
They seem to be very well made, as you would expect from our Teutonic in laws.

Baltipal said...

There's an FT club & a place I haven't been to.
We have to break Ian into International FT Competition gentily as well!

Jon said...

Philleep Steve Mason raves about his but never see him use it in anger any where.

Baltipal said...

Eddie, of course used a HW100.

CB Chairman said...

Now that would be cool John, arriving by helicopter.

Big Phil Halls used a HW100 to successfully win GP C grade in 2007. He finished the season in A grade but since then we've not seen him.

If you shoot Eddie's it is very smooth with a lovely trigger.

Jon said...

How about a trip to US?
Millride versus US of A

tOO EASY

CB Chairman said...

I'm up for that!

Baltipal said...

I think they're dead accurate, but they're Bunny Massacre'ers aren't they? With they're two 14 pellet mags & smooth lever action, it's all abit like shooting a Spandau!

Phil_G said...

£15 each way for a car of 4 if you go with the super saver from Lymington-Yarmouth.
Thats out on the Sat and return on the Sun, £30 total.

Phil_G said...

Pat's was a single pellet.

CB Chairman said...

The single loader is an added extra, Eddie has one as well.

Ian C,mon said...

sorry lads missed that one. i was cooking liver and onions . yes greg me and mia have been down the pub

Phil_G said...

can't say I've seen one in a FT stock?

Baltipal said...

So, when are we hitting the States then? Too late for their Nationals though I think I'll be doing them next year.

Baltipal said...

I seem to remember the price being around £700, I think most would spend that sorta wedge on something abit more FT specific.

Phil_G said...

£650 including the GINB FT stock

CB Chairman said...

Right it's time for House. I'll be back to take 500.

Ian C,mon said...

take 500 my bottom

Jon said...

Now thats sad Mr C

Baltipal said...

I think the HW100 is a fine Hunter & with a GINB on would be a entirely adaquate FT rifle but I remember Eddies failing after a soaking in Scotland & the AT on it is so Teutonically efficient that you do have to send them away to have the power adjusted which can happen a fair bit.

Baltipal said...

Old John at the 'ride shoots a HW100 Karabin.

Jon said...

Greg i was thinking more in terms of a few years to get a team of respectable shooters together.
As is, it would be a slaughter.

Remember Stu telling me about them at 2001 Worlds at Newbury. Had to rely on pre printed range and dialling markings - Couldnt grasp the concept of shooting to get the impact points.
Best one Stu proving many of us group sub 1/4" at 55 yards off the knee with no bondage gear.
Dressed in white thought they came to win, not one in first 30.

John I did buy a replica scope off e-bay it was pants.

Jon said...

Found an M1 3-10X40mm in UK at a dealer.
If he/they are a proper shop worth their salt, tempting its only for hft anything will do.

Baltipal said...

Ist that what it's for, prepping for some 'hooftering'? I thought they were all abit low mag for our game.

Phil_G said...

I checked with the AA. My gun and scope are covered if they are stolen, set fire to or flooded within the home.
Extra £38 covers accidental damage of them and all other household items away from the home.
Although, as sporting goods, the accidental damage is not valid during the sporting act, only during carrying etc, which seems a little strange.

Baltipal said...

I suppose they reason there is more chance of damage during actual use than while being transported, but how would they know?

Jon said...

Got to read the get out clauses, Insurance companies will wriggle out of anything.
Should be covered under normal house contents insurance. Break it whilst cleaning and they dont pay.
Transportation should be under car insurance so getting dosh for nowt.

Phil_G said...

The guy said "it wouldn't be covered if, for example, you had a blowback or sommat"

Jon said...

Used to put some good claims in years ago for my hifi.

Jon said...

Blowback? - No dont go there we dont wanna know.

Baltipal said...

Shaun, you out there? Do you know Bishop Walsh scool in Sutton? My mate Rory teaches Maths there now.

Baltipal said...

I think I know more Teachers now than when I was at school!

CB Chairman said...

Hello Greg, I'm back from "Life" and a short nod off. I know Bishop Walsh but not your mate Rory.

Ian C,mon said...

we won tonight, i put in a 29.4 dame fine.

Ian C,mon said...

"bishop" i have noticed is mentioned a lot on this blog.

Baltipal said...

Still there Ian? Well done mate. I'll have to come along to one of these indoor Bell target meetings one of these days.

CB Chairman said...

Evening chaps!

Quick hello before "Stargate Universe"

Baltipal said...

Buenas tardes muchachos.
You a conosoire of SGU aswell?

Val has signed up for Euskadi, booked up for travel as well, has Easyjet got a price for July yet Shaun?

Phil_G said...

Topic for the evening: sponsorship.
How come a few grubbers can whip up sponsorship from Daystate for a roll about in the mud yet the UKs premier region for FT shooting doesn't have it's Winter League sponsored by anyone?

Baltipal said...

Bill Saunders is a tightwad!

Phil_G said...

OK the airgun selling community is the obvious target, but doesn't someone know a sales guy at Bilston Bathrooms or the like who might want to increase his exposure?

Phil_G said...

Is sponsorship ever discussed at the top secret MFTA elders jamboree?

Baltipal said...

The outside world has never heard of Field Target. Maybe we should learn to promote ourselves. A charity shoot maybe, with a quick call to the local rag for exposure.

Phil_G said...

I guess it's cos anything to do with guns is dangerous and should be banned immediately.

Baltipal said...

Going back to what I said the other day about the half marathon. Too selective about what they throw their weight behind.
Shooting in general needs to stop cowering behind the barracades & start to stand proud abit more, show the public it's safe, it's responcible & it's FUN!

Phil_G said...

latest HtH results are up, its tight at the top.

Baltipal said...

Ooooh! 9th, 10th & 11th!!!!!!

Phil_G said...

I see Boris is now complaining that the proposal to put the shooting at Woolwich barracks is a waste of money, and it should be in.........Barking

"Last month, Mr Johnson accused Olympic chiefs of arrogance and urged them to see sense by rejecting plans to hold the shooting event at Woolwich Barracks, at a cost of £42million.

This could rise to £48million if a shielding wall to protect residents from stray bullets is given the go-ahead.

"Back-up plans" to build five shooting ranges at Barking Riverside off Renwick Road would cost around £20million.

Mr Johnson said: "This would make Barking and Dagenham an Olympic borough, leaving a real legacy by reclaiming land and delivering transport and environmental improvements."

How about Bisley, where money spent on shooting would leave a legacy for.........shooters.
Nah, lets spend it on improving the number 43 bus route eh?

Ian C,mon said...

you where not saying that last weekend greg

Phil_G said...

£6million for a shielding wall, what they building it out of, gold?

Baltipal said...

Last weekend?

Baltipal said...

Oh, it's Ian. Hi mate didn't spot it was you.

I'm trying to start a mass debate (oh err) and you lot are just interested in getting the 500th post.

Baltipal said...

Jonta & Jonny D neck & neck on the H2H Comp, a duel of Titans!
Almost as engrosing as Roy & mine's joust!

Jon said...

I can remember sponsorship well over 10 years ago.
This usually came via a shooter or some one they know.

There were more opens then including a shoot at Himley Hall, attended by Terry Doe and the like.

Jon said...

Should have handed the 1st one in Jan, cleared it, would be 7 a piece now. Missed 8 on 1st Club Agg thought disgusting.

Jon said...

Still aint got a scope for hft.

Shaun reckons them Mark 4 copies are junk, but heard mixed reports. Even the ones that say good or ok, do they know any different.

Theres a BSA jobby as well Deerhunter. Wonder if BSA know as i cant see them listed any where UK and US.

Baltipal said...

I think BS gave a rifle at this years Worlds so, I'll revise my previous comment.

Jon said...

What would be better for hft 3-10x40 or 4-14x50?
Wont bother unless a Meopta or something decent becomes available, i amay have a use for it later.

Ian C,mon said...

wat gun you putting a hft scope on jon

Baltipal said...

Those Simmons White Tales see alot of action don't they?

swiftyx2 said...

Hi Folks,

How you all doing?. You gents ready for Castle on Sunday then?.
I am having some troubles with gun and scope at the min, My zero keeps changing?,After Farcoley I needed to check my set up after missing the close targets.I Reset the zero last week and it was spot on, shot Sunday and it had changed again. So reset it Monday all spot on.Then checked again this morning and it had moved again.
Only thing that is changing is the outside air temp, warm then freezing cold, I think the barrel is been pulled by the cyclinder (air/temp changing).
And to top that off the scope zoom keeps locking.

??????????, Any thoughts.

Phil_G said...

Hiya Swifty, have you got the screw from the muzzle flip into the fig of 8 bracket screwed down tight? I kept mine loosened off.
Ian Taylor, and others, turn the lump off the fig of 8 bracket so that the barrel is fully floating.
Have you tried it with the end cap off? some say it can be due to screwing it on too tight.

Jon said...

BS ?
AA have given that many guns away the last two years alone, it would make you cringe. Many have two!
They sponsor almost every one any good.

Now theres supposed to be a Daystate team.
What a turn round as earlier the name couldnt be associated with FT and no teams carrying that name allowed!
Seems there can be a team, i say CAN as in can because the stipulation is they need 5 GP shooters. At present there is only 3, call it 2 1/2 in use, so its out no team!

Phil_G said...

scope zoom sounds like one of the o rings under the ring is puckered up.
you can remove the little grubscrew holding it on, slide it forward and check they are in good condition. if they're ok, give them a lube with some silicon grease while you're there.

Jon said...

Swifty ole chum what guns that?

Phil_G said...

one of mine had split and the zoom ring was doing the same as you say

Jon said...

Dont bother Swifty, sounds like typical AA build quality.
The tube flexes as its ultra thin wall and wouldnt stand a proper pressure test. Destruction at 240 245 bar, should return back to original dimensions after a test to 300 bar as operating at 200 bar!

Ian C,mon said...

you said it was your corset

Jon said...

That was a works mod Phil some years back. Jenky used to do that.
Probably did the one you had.

swiftyx2 said...

Jon, its a EV2.

Phil, nice one will give it a try with scope.
Have seen people free floating the barrel but have always thought that Air arms are the experts so if they sell it clamped then thats how it should be. Going to send Ossie a PM.

Jon said...

Mr Swift, undo the screw in muzzle break to collar and undo the grub screws holding to the filler end plug. Pull muzzle break off with collar.
Lug protrudes. To try turn collar round 180 degrees so lug is on under side and fit the muzzle break.

See what happens.

Ian C,mon said...

its not clamped there is a gap between the muzzel breack and the barrel.

CB Chairman said...

You guys should watch Stargate!

John the scope I got off e-bay was a Tasco replica, it was pants. I don't know anyone who has tried the Leup replicas. I know the MTC 10x44 is quite popular.

swiftyx2 said...

Cheers Jon,Phil,
Going to give it try in Morning.

Fingers crossed.

Jon said...

Theres play between barrel and muzzle break but the tube veers off a lot more than that as it depressurises.

CB Chairman said...

Sounds tricky Swifty. I'll go for the usual EV variation - clean the barrel.

JONTA said...

Evening guys, Jon, Gary had one of those clone leups. I`m pretty sure he was impressed with it. I think he had the fixed 10x mag jobby

Jon said...

Ta Shaun might go for one now, the 14 mag seems more appealing over all but the 10 mag may be better.

Ian C,mon said...

swifty how about a proper gun a pro target ...............sorted mate

JONTA said...

Steve nothing wrong with your gun mate... just been shooting to much with Lee. He as talked you into having problems...

Just fancy going fishing lets see what we can catch....ah ah

Jon said...

Naughty boy

Ian C,mon said...

good point try shooting around with someone else i will shoot around with you at castle mate if you want ,

Jon said...

Thinking about it Swifty.

It could well be a case of Purleyitis.

swiftyx2 said...

Hi Shaun,Jonta,Ian,

Shaun done the cleaning thing no change , its the windage that keeps moving groups are fine. Looking back this happend last year when the weather got colder and changed again when it warmed up. The last few weeks has been warm and cold.??????????.

JONTA said...

Steve the windage turret is`nt to free is it, ie your not kocking moving it off its setting as the Nikko as no cover to go over it once zero is set.

swiftyx2 said...

Oh no just hit me!!!!!!!!!.

Jonta you could be right.

Any bites???????.

Purley chewed me up and spat me out. Lol

Jon said...

Should settle now then, because its gonna get colder.

Try the collar job, worth doing any way. Mill or file the lug down, free float it properly.

swiftyx2 said...

Jonta,
Put tipex mark on it so know when it has moved. Learned that lesson last year.Lol

swiftyx2 said...

Jon, Have seen lots of top shooters doing the free floating thing. A certain 2008 world champ for one.

swiftyx2 said...

Night gents will update Wednesday night.

Jon said...

Ere another possible is those riser blocks.
They are cut for proper Sportsmatch dovetails like AR5 Ripleys and what i used to make.
AA use a shallow dovetail and theres less grab. Tighten up and it pinches the dovetails in. Extra leverage on scope height.
It dont need much to move and it wouldnt be uncommon to see that just by placing gun down yet alone putting in its box/case!

JONTA said...

See you Steve,,, Go for it

Jon said...

Good night Steve, i do hear Gregs got a nice hammer he will lend you.

JONTA said...

Jon going back to scope choice, what are you using it for HFT or SFT. Hft is 10x max and Sft is 12x max

Baltipal said...

¡Por favor Juanito!

Baltipal said...

Do they have a max mag in HFT?

JONTA said...

Have you been to sleep Greg

JONTA said...

I am sure it is 10x

Jon said...

Only need a butt pad for the Steyr, found an M5x75 cap hd.

I have big plans for it and any proposed work cannot be reversed.

JONTA said...

What kind of butt pad do you need. I will look to see if i have anything

Jon said...

Glad you said John, better check now.
Only thought it was so that lower mag covers a wider range without adjusting focus.

Phil J got a silver 6.5-20EFR.

Baltipal said...

I thought given the restriction of not being able to touch your scope during a comp, x10 mag was the setting that gave the deepest depth of field. Now I've got a portential Hoofter Piece I should read up on the rules I 'spose.

Baltipal said...

There you have, great minds think alike!

No, Jon. I thought Stargate Universe was on at 0900hrs, I was wrong! Then I started watching 'The Reaping', but those bloody advert breaks do my head in!

Jon said...

Its the hunter stock i have dunno what it comes with.
Sold a Wegu brand new i had for 12 years or more earlier this year.

Aaagh got an Anchutz and similar others but they wont let me use the hook and useless without.

JONTA said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
CB Chairman said...

I don't think there is a mag restriction for HFT other than you can't touch it once you've started.

Baltipal said...

Are you sure that it isn't a case of once you've set the mag you can't then touch it again & x12 would just be too restricting from the point of view of rangeing?

JONTA said...

just had a look at the rules Greg you are right you can use what you like but 10x seems the norm. It appears over 12x is a inderrance.

Jon i may have a wegu type pad. If I have it will be a pT one, will have a look

Baltipal said...

Definitely, SFT has a max mag of x12 but HFT........I've asked the question on STB any how.

Baltipal said...

GOOD GAWD, I'VE GOT ONE RIGHT!!!!!

Shaun, did you catch my question right at the bginning regarding travel booking to Euskadi?

CB Chairman said...

On it now.

Well done for your previous work; 1 house point.

CB Chairman said...

No Greg still only booking for June 2010.

Baltipal said...

Baltipal said...

Hmmm, I wonder who Val is travelling with?

CB Chairman said...

He's going by ferry.

JONTA said...

Looks like ian as gone to sleep again so he can claim being the last one up again, or try and claim 600

Baltipal said...

Oh, I see.

He is waiting with his finger over the 'Publish' button for 600 to come around.

The Poacher!

JONTA said...

I`m off guys G`night

CB Chairman said...

Me too, the tension of who'll get 600 is too much!

Or was that a ruse so I could get it?

Just had a butchers on STB, noticed your questions and tend to think the 40 bell better for that purpose.

This is what i sold my Mark 4 for originally but couldnt handle the range we require to focus on when at 50 mag non illuminated.

Then what happens?????????,

"Walking through garage door to get out of downpoor"
Smash gun into door frame knocking out of hands and lands on muzzle.

Right,
Going into garage armed with Allen keys and seeing if I can find whats moved if not everything.

One good thing it hit wood so not to many marks, scope looks to have got away damage free.

Wife has been and removed all sharp objects from garage. She also said how sad it was to watch a grown man cry over a lump of wood and metal. Thought I was made of stone.

Look on the bright side Steve, its only an AA, could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Jon said...

Steve it takes a lot to bend a barrel, a lot more than a side whack in to some thing.

Go over the scope.
Slacken every screw off in mounts and riser blocks and press scope down on dovetail whilst tightening back up.
Zero, give the scope a knock and see if it alters again. If it does as earlier shallow dovetails and Sportsmatch= crimping of the tops of dovetail on gun when tight. If not tight, you can only expect it to move.

Well hello, I'm back after a week without broadband and 2 days without phone, courtesy of BT. (Changing ISP on 26th)

Steve, I feel your anguish. I was going to say "pain" but there's probably nothing any different in that respect is there.

Swifty, thats terrible news, I feel for you.
I hope everythings OK mate, let us know.

Arby, she's let you back on the computer then? How did the rewiring go?

Arby said...

Phil, I'm in a constant state of anxiety, I'm frightened to leave the house unless she's with me. Funny you mentioned the wiring, the consumer unit tripped earlier tonight, for no apparent reason.

Hello Royston

Up-date,

Undone the 3 grub screws on the collar and barrel sprung back over.
